On December 27th we remembered Joe Harris, who would have turned 30. From
a very young age, Joseph celebrated his birthday with his cousins, Charlie, Josh,
Dave and Esther and a few close friends. Established early on, the celebration
involved an afternoon of games including football in the garden, parcel the
parcel, sleeping lions, musical bumps and tag. The menu was the same every
year, including on his 21 st birthday: chicken nuggets, chips and tomato ketchup
followed by jelly and ice cream and a very sugary cake. After the meal, the
children watched a video while the ‘grown-ups’ had their meal. One of Joseph’s
closest schoolfriends, whom he met aged 3 was Will Lindsay. This year Will and
seven of Joe’s closest friends from KES celebrated his 30 th with a party hosted
by Miranda, Naomi, Josh and Dave. For Joe’s Mum, it was heartwarming to be
together with his friends and family on such a poignant day and remember the
many joyful occasions with him. Although not following the tradition fully, jelly
and ice cream was available and a hilarious game of pass the parcel followed.
Forfeits included the Macarena for Dave and Will, and a verse from a Christmas
carol from Tom Dyble. The evening was rounded off with a lively dance
competition judged by Miles Buttrick.
